A rhinoplasty requires general anesthesia to ensure you are fully asleep. It may be performed using one of two procedures. The first is a closed rhinoplasty that requires only internal incisions. An open rhinoplasty will require an incision across the columella, which is the area between the nostrils. The type of incision you receive will depend on where and how your nose needs reshaping.
After making the incision, Dr. Hu will work to reshape the nose or nostrils. He may sculpt the bridge or tip of the nose to change its shape or may alter the angle in the area between the upper lip and nose. In some cases, it might be necessary to remove excess tissue inside the nose.
Sometimes, the nasal bones will need to be purposefully fractured in order to shape the nose to a more slim and narrow appearance. In other cases, cartilage may need to be harvested from elsewhere in the body, such as the ear, to be used to reinforce and augment the existing nasal structures.
When the procedure is complete, your incisions will be closed. Splints and/or gauze packing may be placed inside the nose to prevent swelling and excessive bleeding. Nasal splints typically remain on the nose for a week, while nasal packing is usually removed the next day.
