The development of male breasts is actually quite common and may be caused by a number of things. Men who feel self-conscious about the size of their breasts can elect to have gynecomastia surgery performed by Dr. Howard Hu of Valencia Plastic Surgery.

Enlarged male breasts are a very common condition, affecting 40 to 60 percent of the male population. A history of cancer, liver disorders, or the use of certain drugs (anabolic steroids, alcohol, estrogen medications, etc.) can contribute to gynecomastia. However, you may be one of the many men Santa Clarita plastic surgeon Dr. Hu treats, who suffers from enlarged male breasts with an unknown cause.

What Is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is the development of what appear to be female breasts in men. It may be caused by excessive weight gain, hormonal imbalances, or taking certain medications. Many times, male breasts do not become smaller whenever the underlying cause of them is corrected, leaving men with no other option than to consider surgery.

Benefits of Gynecomastia Surgery For Male Breast Reduction

Gynecomastia surgery offers many benefits for men who suffer from the condition of overdeveloped breast tissue. Patients who undergo this procedure often report they have increased confidence and feel more masculine, as a result.

How Is Gynecomastia Surgery For Male Breast Reduction Performed?

Gynecomastia surgery may be performed with liposuction, excision, or a combination of the two. Both procedures can be completed under local anesthesia in a relatively short amount of time.

If liposuction is chosen, Dr. Hu will make several incisions along the side and bottom of the breast.

This will allow him to insert a small, thin tube known as a cannula into the breast to break up fatty deposits and then suction them away.

When performing an excision, a long incision may be made across the breast or in a circular pattern around it. Excess glandular tissue, fat, and skin will then be trimmed and tightly sewn shut. In some cases, the areola may be reduced in size and repositioned to a more natural location on the chest area.
